1965 Martin Custom Baritone Ukeulele
$4,500.00In stock
Natural, with style 45 fingerboard and headstock inlays. EX++. This is a truly unique piece of Martin history. Martin Ukuleles have no serial number, so it’s tough to find the exact date of manufacture. This has a Made in USA center back strip stamp (post 1961) and a deep dark Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard (pre ’68).
Whoever special ordered this knew his or her Martin history because the torch headstock inlay had not been used in decades and the style 45 fingerboard inlays were pre World War II. It’s factory work with clean original finish and the choice Brazilian Rosewood looks like ebony.
Having the same inlay as a pre-war 0-45 without any fingerboard binding is very unique. Baritone Ukes are a folk instrument so the lack of 45 level pearl on the body is an artful balance. It just works. Easy to read the fingerboard and the visual joy of owning a classic Martin with an abalone torch headstock brings a rush every time you open the case.
Have you ever heard a baritone saxophone with its deeply rich punch over other smaller saxes? Of course, you have. This baritone has that richness of note and growl normally found on better classical guitars. Easy to play for guitar players as its tuned DGBE just like the top four strings on guitar yet all of the fingering positions work for you Uke players.
This is quite possibly one of a kind. If you know of another we’d love to know. Martin’s shipping records show only a few custom baritones, but they are all koa. Comes with the original deluxe hard shell case with regal red lining and nickel hardware. Something very special.
